Positive Behaviour Support

My personal approach

Positive Behaviour Support  and Early Intervention (up to 9 years) – My Heart’s Work

As a Positive Behaviour Support Practitioner and Early Intervention Practitioner, this work is not just a job for me—it’s my heart’s work, one of the greatest purposes I could have been given in my life.
I know firsthand the difference that  early intervention and positive behaviour support can make, because my own child had an incredible Positive Behaviour Support Plan (PBSP) that changed our lives. It allowed me to truly understand my child's needs and gave us the tools to support them in a way that was respectful, empowering, and authentic.

Through that journey, I witnessed my child thrive—not by being forced to change who they are, but by being supported to grow into their full, beautiful potential. They moved from surviving to thriving, which in turn saw us as a family begin to find joy and connect with each other. My child began reaching milestones and joys I could never have imagined in our hardest days. Having someone walk alongside us, supporting us through every challenge, made all the difference—and it's the reason I do what I do today.

Now, as a PBS Practitioner, I am honoured to be part of that same solution for other families: giving children the opportunity to flourish and helping families find hope and direction. Early intervention is powerful, but meaningful support at any age and stage can change the trajectory of a child’s—and future adult’s—life. After all, we’re not just raising children; we’re raising the next generation of adults.

What Positive Behaviour Support will look like with me.

I provide Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) that is built around the belief that all behaviour is communication — especially for children who are still developing the skills to express themselves in other ways.

Positive Behaviour Support with me, is all about giving children the best chance to feel understood, supported, and safe — right from the start. My PBS services are a great fit for children and adolescents with disabilities, particularly those who are Autistic, have ADHD, ODD, a PDA profile, have communication difficulties or experience other forms of disability and neuro-divergence. I work with your child, you and everyone involved in their care to create a consistent, supportive environment where your child can truly thrive.

Supporting Your Child and Family

My approach is grounded in my background in counselling, teaching, and a strong understanding of child development. I have additional training in supporting people with neurological conditions, therapeutic play, regulation through movement inclusive of all varieties of mobility, and somatic mind-body integration for emotional, behavioural, and sensory regulation.

At the heart of PBS is teamwork — and that’s a huge part of what I offer.
I don’t just work with your child in a therapy room and send you home with a report. I step into your child's world—whether that’s at home, school, playgroup, the park, or even the shops—to really understand what’s going on for them. By seeing your child across different environments, I can better tailor strategies that fit real life, not just theory.

PBS creates a framework of strategies that everyone—parents, teachers, support workers, babysitters, therapists, and extended family—can follow. When we all work together, using the same approach, your child gets the consistency they need to feel safe, regulated, and successful.

As your PBS practitioner, it’s my job to coordinate and communicate with everyone involved, taking the pressure off you as the parent and ensuring the whole support team is on the same page bridging the gap between therapists, teachers and home life.

What Positive Behaviour Support Includes:
  • Therapy for the child/participant

  • Training for parents, carers and support workers/support network unique to the child's needs.

  • Functional Behaviour Assessments (FBAs) – gathering information on what triggers behaviours and what supports your child needs

  • Positive Behaviour Support Plans (PBSPs) – practical, easy-to-use plans for home, school, and the wider community

  • Recommendation Reports – to help you secure the right funding and supports through the NDIS

  • Collaboration with Your Child’s Network – teachers, therapists, carers, support workers, grandparents – anyone involved in your child’s care

  • Parent and Carer Support – providing you with counselling, strategies, and a safe space to process your journey

  • Home Visits, School Visits, and Community Observations – so I can create real-world solutions, not cookie-cutter programs

  • Social Support and strategies.

  • Social Scripts if beneficial to the person by reducing anxiety around socialising.

  • Writing social stories to support your child in social situations or navigating new experiences

The Tools I Use

PBS isn’t just one therapy—it’s a blend of many evidence-based approaches, carefully tailored to fit your child’s needs:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – teaching children how their thoughts, feelings, and actions are connected, and building skills to manage them

  • Behavioural Analysis – identifying patterns and understanding the “why” behind behaviours, so we can make real, lasting changes

  • Solution-Focused Therapy – focusing on strengths and building skills in small, achievable steps

  • Interoception Awareness – helping kids recognise and respond to internal body signals (hunger, anxiety, excitement, tiredness)

  • Sensory Profiling and Integration – understanding how touch, taste, temperature, sound, and movement affect your child and their behaviour

  • Environmental Analysis – adjusting surroundings that might be contributing to stress or dysregulation

  • Somatic Approaches – connecting mind and body through movement and sensory activities to build regulation skills

  • and others as the child or participant may require. If it is beyond my scope of practice we can refer your child to a support that will extend and offer more specific therapy in that area. Such at Occupational Therapy (OT), Speech etc.

  • AND MY FAVOURITE PART: Play and Functional Therapy. Where we get to bake cookies, make volcano's , do craft, run and twirl. Because I know learning happens best when children feel safe and are having fun. So I cater all my activities to your child's interests!

Positive Behaviour Support with me is personalised, respectful, and designed to support not just the child, but the whole family—because children don't grow in isolation. They grow in relationships, in families, and in communities.

Social Skills and Authentic Connection

I also support children with building authentic social interactions, in a way that is neuro-affirming and comfortable for them.
It’s not about forcing kids to behave a certain way—it’s about creating opportunities for connection that feel safe and true to who they are. We work together to build confidence, foster meaningful relationships, and give your child positive social experiences that honour their identity and needs.

Advocacy, Co-Regulation, and Empowering Your Child

One of the most important parts of my work is co-regulation—being that steady, safe person children can lean on when their emotions feel too big. Through repeated experiences of being co-regulated, your child will start to understand their own needs and develop the skills to regulate themselves. Inbetween sessions with me you will be supported in having the confidence to know how to support them and co-regulate with them. I will also work with you to support your ability to self-regulate in stressful situations further supporting your child, because as I know all too well as a primary carer/parent; we "can't pour from and empty cup" and a well regulated carer means a more regulated child!

My ultimate goal?
That your child will one day be able to recognise when they’re feeling overwhelmed, understand what they need, advocate for themselves, and take steps to meet those needs—before escalation happens.

It’s about building resilience, self-awareness, and self-advocacy—skills that will support your child not just now, but across their whole life. And if they don't have the capacity to do so, ensuring they will have the supports around them to give them what they need, to live a good qualify of life full of positive and meaningful experiences.

Working Together

For me - Positive Behaviour Support is about connection, collaboration, and celebrating your child's unique way of being in the world. Together, we'll create a roadmap that helps your child, your family, and everyone around them feel supported, understood, and empowered.

Because when we work together, incredible things can happen.

What are the steps?

Because Positive Behaviour Support is highly regulated under the NDIS we have to follow a strict protocol - Don't worry I'll guide you through it. It isn't as daunting as it seems once you get started

1. Arrange a 15 minute Complementary chat

(Either text or call me to arrange a time)

2. Email in your "Refferal Form"

If you decide to go ahead with me as your practitioner I will send you a "referral form" to the company I am registered with to provide positive Behaviour Support - Insightful Impact. They manage the paperwork and admin. You will deal directly with me for all support, therapy, training and plans.

3. Sign the agreement

An agreement will be sent to you - sign it online. Then it will be forwarded to me to co-sign. (This is a non-restrictive agreement under NDIS' choice & control. Meaning you can stop receiving services at any time, you just have to let me or the Admin team know).

4. I will call you to arrange a parent meeting.

The first meeting is a parent meeting. It is best your child is not present at this however I know that is not always possible and there are ways to work around. At this meeting we will discuss any concerns you might have regarding your child's behaviour, your child's challanges, needs, strengths, likes and dislikes. All of this information will help me build a unique plan for your child and make sure I am working with them on their terms and can building rapport from my first meeting with them. At this stage you get to decide where and how you would like your child's funding to be used, if you are unsure I am here to offer suggestions and guidance.

5. Therapy & Observations

I will come to meet your child and have a session with them. A lot of the first session will be spent getting to know them and build a rapport with them so they know me and are comfortable with me. Don't worry this isn't wasted time. I am also getting to know them through play and get an understanding of who they are. When they are ready we will touch on areas that can help them and discover what they need. I will also go into school or elsewhere that you feel they are showing behaviours of concern and observe the environment, interpersonal relationships, activities and interactions.

6. Planning.

After this I provide therapy and training to fit in with your child and your families needs and routines. I will meet with your child's support team including therapist and teachers and you are invited to be included every step of the way. I will build a "Positive Behaviour Support Plan" and get your approval that it fits in with what your goals are for your child and that it fits them and their needs and once you are happy with it, I provide it to you and your support team. I will also provide resources for you to have at home and to take to school or elsewhere to support them. I keep you up-to-date on their progress and you are able to contact me for support whenever needed. From here on in we continue, adjusting and tweaking things that do or don't work and often in need or adjusting as your child progresses along their journey. It's an organic document that changes as your child's needs change. Before your annual NDIS review I will collaborate with you and use the information collected over the year from your child's whole support team to write a reccomendation report which will be provided for you to help you secure the right funding and suppprts through the NDIS

Positive behaviour support

Positive behaviour support is an evidence, value and rights based approach. It focuses on improving a person’s quality of life and understanding the reasons behind behaviour and ways to meet a person’s needs. This includes strategies such as teaching a person new skills, making changes to their environment and providing guidance to their support team.

behaviour support plan provides strategies to address behaviours. It meets the individual’s needs, while respecting their dignity and working to improve their quality of life.

Developing behaviour support plans

Specialist behaviour support providers work closely with NDIS participants and others to:

  • develop a behaviour support plan

  • put the behaviour support plan into action

  • check to make sure things are getting better over time.

There are rules that specialist behaviour support providers need to follow. These are in place to protect the rights of people with disability and reduce and eliminate restrictive practices over time.

Behaviour support practitioners are employed by registered specialist behaviour support providers to develop behaviour support plans.

Only behaviour support practitioners who are considered suitable by the NDIS Commission can develop a behaviour support plan.

Positive behaviour support: • helps you have a good quality of life • is a proven way of understanding and changing behaviour • focuses on you and the people around you • values and protects your rights • guides people about how to best support you • makes changes to the environment so that it meets your needs • helps to put in place the right supports at the right times and places • does not use punishment or strategies that can hurt you. How can behaviour support help you? Positive behaviour support aims to make things better so you can: • have a good quality of life • get support that meets your needs and helps you achieve your goals • be supported by people who are well trained and know the best ways to help you • get along with others and build strong, long lasting relationships

Key aspects of Positive Behaviour Support:

  • Understanding behaviour:

PBS starts by trying to understand the reasons behind behaviours of concern, recognising that challenging behaviours often stem from unmet needs or communication difficulties.

  • Person-centered approach:

PBS recognises that each individual is unique and requires a tailored approach to support their specific needs and goals.

  • Building skills:

PBS emphasises teaching new skills to individuals as alternatives to challenging behaviours, promoting positive communication and social skills.

  • Environment modification:

PBS also considers modifying the environment to make it more supportive and accommodating, reducing potential triggers for challenging behaviours.

  • Collaborative teamwork:

PBS involves collaboration between the individual, their family, support workers, and professionals, creating a consistent and positive support system.

  • Long-term success:

PBS is a long-term approach that focuses on sustained positive change, requiring ongoing monitoring, assessment, and adjustment of strategies to ensure continuous improvement.

By addressing the root causes of challenging behaviours and providing appropriate supports, PBS aims to create a positive and inclusive environment where individuals can thrive.
